Dark Sky Preservation

For the past 16 years, the Town of Springdale has been taking steps to preserve the quality of the dark night skies.

In 2023, Springdale became Utah's twenty-third International Dark Sky Place certified by DarkSky International. This designation represents many years of concerted efforts by the residents, businesses, town staff, and elected officials of Springdale to preserve the night sky.

The Town has adopted standards for outdoor lighting at residences and businesses. In conjunction with the SR9 reconstruction, the Town installed new night sky-friendly streetlights. The town later made custom retrofits to those streetlights to better control the light and protect the night sky. The Town has arranged and sponsored a series of night sky lectures, telescope star parties, and other educational events to help promote awareness of the importance of dark night skies. The Town has partnered with Zion National Park on their dark sky preservation efforts and supported their nomination as a dark-sky park.

All these efforts have helped preserve the dark night sky in the town. Springdale continues to enjoy dark night skies and clear views of the stars because of our community’s commitment.
