The Gooseberry Mountain Bike Poker Ride is a fundraising activity sponsored by the Rotary Club of Zion Canyon. The Club is raising money to fund the installation of water filling stations at the shuttle stops in Springdale and all the proceeds from the ride will go towards the water filling station project (see Water Filling Station section below). Thousands of visitors each year utilize the shuttle system in Springdale to access Zion National Park. Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks have recently installed water filling stations for filling reusable water bottles reducing the use of (and disposal of) bottled water.
The ride is a "poker ride" where participants accumulate playing cards along the ride. At the end of the ride, the person with the best poker hand will win a cash prize.

Gooseberry Mesa is a popular mountain biking area. The poker ride will existing mountain bike trails on the mesa. The ride is about 9 miles long and should take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete.
Most of the route is on trails that have been designated as moderate routes, however some sections are on trails designated as difficult. Riders may ride alternate trail sections if desired. Many of the other trails on the Mesa are rated as difficult. Riding alternate trails is up to the rider and care should be taken to ensure that riders have enough skill to ride on more advanced trails.
Riders should expect a ride that is cardio intermediate to advanced and techinical intermediate to advanced. Riders should ensure they have the training and skills necessary to ride more advanced trails. Beginning or less experienced riders may have difficulty and should carefully evaluate the route and their skills before particpating. The route follows trails that are in close proximity to steep drop offs, obstacles and other hazards. Beginning riders may always ride the main road out and back as an optional route. All of the poker card points are on the road.
The following helpful hints and ride reminders will help you have a fun and memorable experience at the Gooseberry Mountain Bike Poker Ride.
Water and First Aid
Water will be available at each card location. Please bring your favorite reusable water container.
First aid will be available at the start/end area.
Access to Gooseberry Mesa
Gooseberry Mesa can be accessed from either SR-9 and Bridge Road in Rockville or from SR-59 east of Hurricane. It takes about 30 minutes to get from Hurricane, and an hour to get from Springdale, to the parking area on the mesa where the start/end of the ride is located. A four-wheel drive vehicle is suggested for driving from Springdale/Rockville. If the road is wet, it is very slippery.
The race will begin from the second parking lot on the mesa, about 4.4 miles from the Smithsonian Road and Gooseberry Road intersection. Participation is expected to be high and parking in the lot is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Overflow parking will be located at the first parking area (about a mile from the start/end point.
Ride Start Time
Day of ride registration will be from 4 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on May 21st. The ride will begin at 5:00 p.m. and participants will follow the leader bike onto the route. As it is a ride and not a race, leaving first to get back first isn't necessary. However, everyone needs to start the ride before the sweeper bike. The sweeper bike will ensure that all riders make it safely back to the start/finish area. Prizes will be awarded at approximately 7:30 p.m.
We are working on some fun activities for an after party that will happen after the prizes are awarded. Live music, food and a campfire are being discussed. When details are finalized, we'll post them here.
The BLM allows dispersed camping on Gooseberry Mesa. You may want to stay the night and keep the party going with your friends. Please review the BLM's camping rules and guidelines available through the BLM website. You can also find information on Gooseberry Mesa on the BLM's website here.
The ride is a "poker ride" where participants accumulate playing cards along the ride. There are four card points along the ride. The last card will be at the end of the ride. After the completion of the ride, the person with the best poker hand will win a cash prize.
The ride will use normal 5 card poker winning hands:
Poker Ride - Getting the best hand
While every rider will get five playing cards on the ride, there are opportunities to get more cards to increase the odds of getting a good hand. Riders may purchase extra cards for $5/card. There are no limits on the number of extra cards that can be purchased. We are also looking at some other fun ways to give out extra cards. For instance, if you happen to get a flat tire along the ride, you'll maybe get an extra card for the trouble.
Best hand - $100 cash prize
2nd best hand - $75 cash prize
3rd best hand - $50 cash prize
Everyone - A great time riding in Southern Utah!
Other cool prizes are in the works. As they are finalized, we'll post them here.
